Release Date: 2016-11-14

Last Updated: 2017-08-24

DESCRIPTION

When using an HPE Smart Array Controller, certain HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers with an HPE 8-bay SFF backplane installed may fail to boot into the Operating System (OS) installed on the drive in Bay 1 if the HPE Smart Array controller is running in Host Bus Adapter (HBA) mode and the System BIOS is set to Legacy mode.

This is normally the expected bay to use in this HBA and Legacy configuration, but some backplanes route the device index for each bay differently, preventing the OS from being discovered.

SCOPE

Any HPE Smart Array Gen9 controller running in HBA mode and configured in an HPE ProLiant Gen9 server set up in Legacy mode and with an HPE 8-bay SFF backplane installed.

RESOLUTION

To prevent or resolve this issue, use the Bay 4 for the installation of the operating system instead of Bay 0 or Bay 1. Once the OS is installed to the drive in Bay 1, the drive can be moved to Bay 4 if the OS does not boot.

Refer to the respective server guide available at HPE.com for more details on installing the operating system from a different bay.
