DESCRIPTION

On certain HPE Smart Array Gen 9 Px4x controllers, a 1793 or 1797 message may be displayed at Power-On Self-Test (POST) following a backup and restore operation of the Flash Backed Write Cache (FBWC). When this occurs, the FBWC may become disabled.

One of the following POST messages will be displayed only on the first reboot after an unexpected shutdown:

  • 1793-Slot # Drive Array Write-Back Cache Backup Previously Failed. Caching is disabled.
  • 1793-Slot # Drive Array Data in Write-Back Cache has been Lost. Write-Back Cache Backup Failed.
  • 1793-Slot # Drive Array Data in Write-Back Cache has been Lost. Action: Verify the integrity of the data on the drive. Backup and restore data if necessary. Perform orderly shutdowns to avoid leaving data in the cache.

One of the following messages will be displayed during POST every time when the server is rebooted:

  • 1797-Slot # Drive Array Write-Back Cache Read Error Occurred - Data in Cache has been lost. Caching is disabled.
  • 1797-Slot # Drive Array Write-Back Cache Backup Previously Failed. Caching is disabled.
  • 1797-Slot # Drive Array Write-Back Cache Backup Previously Failed. Caching is disabled. Action: Replace the Cache Module.
  • 1797-Slot # Drive Array Write-Back Cache Restore Previously Failed. Caching is disabled. Action: Replace the Cache Module.
NOTE: This affects only controllers that have cache embedded.

SCOPE

Any ProLiant server configured with an HPE Smart Array Gen9 Px4xar or Px4xbr controller.

RESOLUTION

Update the Smart Array Controller firmware to version 4.02 in order to proactively prevent this issue. Upgrade to HPE Smart Array Firmware Version 4.02 by following the steps below:

  1. Click the following link:

  2. Enter a product name (e.g., "P244br") in the text field under Enter a Product Name or Number.
  3. Click Go.
  4. Select the appropriate product model from the Results list (if prompted).
  5. Click the "drivers, software & firmware" hyperlink under the Download Options tab.
  6. Select the system's specific operating system from the Operating Systems dropdown menu.
  7. Click the category Firmware- Storage Controller.
  8. Select the latest release of Online ROM Flash Component Version 4.02 (or later).
  9. Click Download.

If the issue has already occurred, replace the HPE Smart Array controller if the Smart Array Controller cache is embedded on the Smart Array controller board. For further assistance, refer to the following support information:

NOTE: For Gen9 controllers that do not have cache embedded, the cache is not replaceable by itself. The controller and cache must be replaced at the same time.
