In rare occurrences, some Virtual Connect Flex-10/10D IO Modules running HP Virtual Connect (VC) Firmware Version 4.20 or 4.30 may shut down due to a single instance of an erroneous high temperature reading from one of eight sensors on the module. If this issue occurs, traffic will automatically failover to the redundant VC Flex-10/10D module without any data interruption. The following event may display on the Onboard Administrator (OA) when "show all" is entered to reveal the log:

xxxx OA: Temperature of Interconnect in slot x is critical - module shut down

For networks with a redundant configuration, a single Flex-10/10D module failure will not cause an interruption of traffic.

NOTE:
  • This issue will not occur in VC Firmware Version 4.10 (or earlier).
  • The HP Virtual Connect Flex-10/10D Module for c-Class BladeSystem (638526-B21) is the only module affected by this issue. Other Virtual Connect Modules are not affected.
  • VC Firmware Version 4.31 has logic added for Virtual Connect's temperature monitoring to determine if a temperature reading is critical or not. A side effect of this logic is that temperature warnings will be logged in OA and VC syslogs as crossing the warning temperature threshold and then corrected 5 seconds later. The messages will be logged in both the OA syslog and VC syslog, respectively, 5 seconds apart.

While the module may not shut down, the following messages will display in the Onboard Administrator syslog:

Jun 22 17:29:47 OA: Temperature of Interconnect in slot 2 is at alert level
Jun 22 17:29:52 OA: Temperature of Interconnect in slot 2 is normal

The following messages will display in the VC syslog:

2015-06-22T17:29:52+09:00 VCEX27C950401X4 vcmd: [ENET:enc0:iobay2:3008:Warning] Enet Module OA Thermal Event

SCOPE

Any HP Virtual Connect Flex-10/10D Module for c-Class BladeSystem (638526-B21) including VC FlexFabric 20/40 F8 Modules running Firmware Version 4.20, 4.30 or 4.40.

RESOLUTION

If the module shuts down, download and install the latest available VC firmware version:

  1. Click on the following link:

    http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/portal/site/hpsc?ac.admitted=1447799799154.125225703.1938120508

  2. Enter a product name, "HP Virtual Connect Flex-10/10D Module for c-Class BladeSystem" and click Go.
  3. Click the link for "Get drivers, software & firmware" on the Download Options tab.
  4. Select the appropriate operating system.
  5. Click on the category, "Firmware-Blade Infrastructure."
  6. Locate, download, and install HP BladeSystem c-Class Virtual Connect Firmware Version 4.50 or later.
NOTE: HP Virtual Connect Firmware Versions 4.31, 4.40 (and later) all correct and prevent the module shutdown issue. If Virtual Connect (VC) Firmware Version 4.31 (or later) is being used, then the warning messages in the Onboard Administrator and VC syslogs can safely be ignored.

Virtual Connect Firmware Version 4.50 will correct all erroneous temperature readings, preventing both module shutdown and logged warnings in OA and VC syslogs.
